VoIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol - IP addresses
About
13% of international voice traffic is now carried by Internet
telephony. Although less than one-fifth of 1% of U.S.
phone lines use a VoIP phone service, the technology is making
huge inroads behind the scenes, in long-distance networks and
at big companies, according to a new report by TeleGeography.
The 13% of global phone traffic that analyst Stephan Beckert
estimates is now transported via voice over IP accounts for
nearly 24.5 bil minutes a year. In 2002, voice over IP's share
of international traffic was 10%; it was 4% in 2000.

Radicati Group estimates that 1.2 bln spim have been sent this
year, up from 400 mln last year. It says the rise of spim
messages also corresponds to the massive growth in
instant-messaging businesses. Ferris Research says that only 10
mln people used IM in 2002, but it predicts
182 mln people will use it in 2007. According to the
Radicati Group, about 70% of spim messages direct users to
pornographic websites, while 12% are finance and
"get-rich-quick" plans. Consumer products for sale make up about
9% and loans or finance messages about 5%.
